Parenting on Purpose

Week 1: Legacy of Faith

Pastor Trevor Sudheimer and Family Life Director Jenn Martin | In Parenting on Purpose

Legacy of Faith

Evidence in Scripture

Big Picture Question and Answer

  • Q: Who is God?

  • A: God is our Creator and King of everything.

Genesis 1:27-28

  • God made man in his image and gave them a two-fold commission:

    • Be Fruitful & Multiply

    • Subdue / Have Dominion Over the Earth

  • In other words, make more of you to reflect ME and rule the earth as I would - be the agency that shows the earth what it looks like to live in My presence and work with Me as Your Good Creator and King.

The rest of the Old Testament is the story of how humanity epically failed at their one job. With a few shining examples of “righteousness” - people who realized their dependence on and relationship with God matters more than anything else.

  • Deuteronomy 6

  • Israel had been wandering in the wilderness for 40 years and they had SEEN first hand the power and goodness of God.

  • AND STILL…Moses knew he needed to warn them “take care lest you forget”.

  • The rest of Deuteronomy is his speech before they enter the Promised Land: “Here’s how we operate in a land where God is our King.”

  • Chapter 7 talks about how they are “A Chosen People” - “holy to the Lord” - “set apart for His purpose” - think back to Exodus 19 before Mt. Sinai when they received the law and the covenant. They were called to be a Kingdom of Priests (the position that brought people into a right relationship with God).

  • This again echoes our one job.

This Legacy of Faith is found all through the poetry books and wisdom literature.

  • Psalms - Songs for while we are here

    • Psalm 78

  • Proverbs - Full of wisdom for how to live in this Kingdom.

    • Proverbs 16:31

    • Proverbs 20:29

    • Proverbs 22:15

  • Ecclesiastes: The whole premise of the book is to deconstruct all the ways we try to find meaning and purpose apart from God and His good design. But ultimately, we are reminded to remember our Creator and keep His commandments.

    • Ecclesiastes 1:2-5, 9

    • Ecclesiastes 12:1, 13-14

The Prophetic books issue several warnings to not forget God and His good ways, encouragement when we do and suffer the consequences, and reminders of who He is, that this wont be the end of the story, that God is faithful and will re-establish them and renew their purpose.

Then JESUS comes along and continues the story. He shows us what Kingdom mission looks like, and confronts those who manage the Temple (the place where God is supposed to meet with the people) for not doing it well.

  • Matthew 28 - the Great Commission

  • What is a disciple? Be with Jesus, Become like Him, Do as He did.

After this, the message becomes more urgent.

  • Romans 10

  • Eph 5:15-16

  • Ephesians 6

  • 2 Timothy 4:3-4

  • Titus 2

  • Revelation 12:11

It is difficult, but He has made it possible for us to do the work. Now what is ours to do? How will they believe?

  • Ephesians 2:8-10

  • 1 Corinthians 15:58

  • Romans 10
