Jonah

Week 3: God’s Not Done With You

Pastor Trevor Sudheimer | In Jonah

God’s Not Done With You

Then the word of the Lord came to Jonah a second time ...  Jonah 3:1 NIV

Now the Lord provided a huge fish to swallow Jonah … Jonah 1:17 NIV

Sometimes what we call a problem, God calls provision.

While you’re waiting, God is still working.

And the Lord commanded the fish, and it vomited Jonah onto dry land.  Jonah 2:10 NIV

Then the word of the Lord came to Jonah a second time ... Jonah 3:1 NIV

[God] saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. ... Titus 3:5 NIV

The God of Second Chances

  • Adam and Eve sinned against God, but God made a covering for them. (Genesis 3:21)

  • Moses murdered a man, but God still used him to free Israel. (Exodus 3:10)

  • David committed adultery and then murder to cover it up, but when he repented, God forgave his sins—and didn’t stop calling him a “man after God’s own heart.” (1 Samuel 13:14)

  • Rahab had lived as a prostitute, but God included her in his plan to protect the spies and redeemed her into the lineage of Jesus. (Matthew 1:5)

  • Zacchaeus lived a greedy life robbing others, but Jesus came to his home, forgave his sins and saved him. (Luke 19:9)

  • Peter denied Jesus three times, but Jesus forgave Peter and used him to help build the first-century church. (John 21:17)

  • Thomas doubted Jesus, but Jesus appeared to Thomas, loved him, and affirmed his faith. (John 20:27)

“Get up and go to the great city of Nineveh, and deliver the message I have given you.” Jonah 3:2 NLT

לֵ֥ךְ ק֛וּם   qum yalak

Go now! Go immediately! Go today!

Jonah obeyed the word of the Lord and went to Nineveh. Now Nineveh was a very large city; it took three days to go through it. 4Jonah began by going a day’s journey into the city, proclaiming, “Forty more days and Nineveh will be overthrown.”  Jonah 3:3-4 NIV

The Ninevites believed God. ... Jonah 3:5 NIV

You believe that there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that—and shudder. James 2:19 NIV

The Ninevites believed God. A fast was proclaimed, and all of them, from the greatest to the least, put on sackcloth. 6When Jonah’s warning reached the king of Nineveh, he rose from his throne, took off his royal robes, covered himself with sackcloth and sat down in the dust. Jonah 3:5-6 NIV

“… Let everyone call urgently on God. ...” Jonah 3:8 NIV

To truly repent is to change your mind so deeply it changes you completely.

When God saw what they did and how they turned from their evil ways, he relented and did not bring on them the destruction he had threatened. Jonah 3:10 NIV

Yet the Lord longs to be gracious to you; therefore he will rise up to show you compassion. ... Isaiah 30:18 NIV

What is God trying to show you?

Every chance from God demands a choice from you.
